Would you let your daughter...

New Wedding Date

We are getting married on the 2nd December 2006. We decided to change the date for a variety of reasons, including dates people can get there and catering. Some of our families can't make it. Because of that we have decided to travel to New Zealand for the honeymoon and see my family. Also in February we will travel to see Almut's family. Of course there are things like organising a church and place for the reception!

Organising the words of the wedding service

Choosing the liturgy of the services is quite a personal thing. Some people want a very flexible service, others want more of a structured service. Here are some structured liturgy from the Church of England:

Wedding receptions

I have been looking for places to have wedding receptions. We have had a few suggestions including Vinohrady. The thing is a lot of these places are ever too small or too expensive. The interesting thing is that people seem to think in the Czech Republic that 150-200 is a large amount for a reception (we don't know know many yet). I think that is a small to medium service...

In love with the one I will marry!

You know the whole reason for this wedding? Its because I love Alma and she loves me! Isn't that so cool!? All the momentary frustrations of arranging a wedding will be replaced with the joy of being married to the one I love!

Spoke too soon?

It seems the date is impossible for the catering person. So we are now considering whether we will change the date! Ah the joys of getting married!

Reception

One of the biggest costs in having a wedding is the reception. Almut asked a good caterer she knows through OM if he would be willing to cook for us. He is, depending on his schedule. This hopefully really good news!

Wedding traditions

I am a New Zealander and my fiance is German. In Germany both the woman and man get engagement rings (which are actually the same ring as the wedding ring). In New Zealand the woman gets an engagement ring and a separate wedding ring when she gets married. The man doesn't get an engagement ring, and doesn't always get a wedding ring. In Switzerland both the man and the woman get engagement and wedding rings, which are different. In the Czech Republic there a several different traditions, but one is that the couple get silver rings for engagement and gold rings for marriage...

For other wedding traditions see here.

Churches

Alma and I looked at several churches in Prague over the weekend. We looked at Farní Sbor ČCE u salvátora. This is quite a beautiful church, but it is quite cold even in summer. I would hate to think how cold it would be in winter. We then looked at the Bethlehem chapel. I really like this church, especially because of the association with Jan Hus, but it is very expensive. Also looked at the Anglican church in Prague, St Clement's. It is a very nice building, but the same issue exists with the salvatora church we think it would be too cold. Also it doesn't have any rooms attached that we could have a reception in or keep children in.

We finally looked at the Cirkev Bratrska in central Prague. This seemed to be the most appropriate because it has lots of room, a big meeting room for the service (not so sure about the white pews), a place for reception and children. We have to check to see if it actually is possible to use this.

Scary things...

The week before last Almut and I picked wedding rings. Last weekend Almut picked the rings up and bought a dress. A bit scary. Well, not so scary. But serious. I'm getting married!

Marriage preparation

Almut and I have started reading together a book Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts: Seven Questions to Ask Before (and After) You Marry. We have only read the first chapter, but seems good so far. The first chapter starts with dispelling 4 myths of marriage:
  1. We expect exactly the same things from marriage
  2. Everything good in our relationship will get better
  3. Everything bad in our relationship will disappear and
  4. My spouse will make me whole.
While its obvious to us both that these are myths, it gave us some good discussion points!

Czeching for cheap flights

Have a look at this website. It shows lots of countries in Europe...

Churches in Prague

Here are some of the churches in Prague:
Health warning. I know some of these churches are quite good, but I can't vouch for them all...

When and where to get married...

You know one of the hardest things to do is to find a place to get married. The cost is a real issue. I suspect that foreigners get charged more...

Oh well. I'm getting married on the 27th of January. Yet to figure out where though...
